Anchored Teens Hangout
A supportive, in-person 2-session wellbeing circle designed to help young people make sense of their emotions, respond with greater confidence, and grow in their sense of identity and belonging
Session Format
This is a small, in-person wellbeing circle designed to create a calm, supportive, and engaging environment for young people.
- 2 sessions (2 hours each)
- Small group
- Hosted in a relaxed, home-based setting
- Light food and drinks provided
The small group size allows for meaningful conversation, reflection, and connection, while maintaining clear structure and guidance throughout.
Sessions are gently facilitated, balancing guided discussion, real-life scenarios, and practical skill-building in a way that feels natural and age-appropriate.
What We Explore
Across the two sessions, we gently guide young people to better understand what is happening within them — emotionally, mentally, and physically — and how to respond in ways that feel more steady and intentional.
We explore:
Understanding Emotions Beyond the Surface
- what emotions are and why they show up
- how feelings act as signals, not problems to be “fixed”
- why the same situation can feel different for different people
- how thoughts and emotions interact
The Body–Emotion Connection
- how the body responds to pressure, stress, and social situations
- recognising early physical signs of overwhelm (e.g. tension, racing thoughts, shutdown)
- understanding “fast reactions” and where they come from
The Pause Between Feeling and Reaction
- recognising the small space between what we feel and what we do
- understanding impulses (reacting quickly, shutting down, overthinking)
- learning how to slow that moment down
Control, Choice, and Personal Responsibility
- the difference between what we can control and what we cannot
- understanding that we cannot control others’ behaviour, but we can choose our response
- developing a sense of ownership over actions and decisions
Real-Life Situations They Are Already Facing
- friendships, misunderstandings, and feeling left out
- peer dynamics and social pressure
- academic expectations and internal pressure
- navigating expectations across home, culture, and school environments
Simple, Practical Regulation Tools
- how to calm the body when emotions feel intense
- using breathing and grounding in a way that actually works
- developing strategies they can return to independently
Identity, Confidence, and Belonging
- understanding that they are not their emotions or reactions
- building confidence in how they handle situations
- developing a stronger sense of self, especially within changing environments
- feeling less alone in their experience
What Young People Take Away
By the end of the sessions, participants will leave with:
- a clearer understanding of what their emotions are communicating, rather than feeling confused or overwhelmed by them,
- the ability to recognise early signs of stress or overwhelm in their body, before reactions escalate,
- practical ways to pause and slow down their response in everyday situations,
- increased confidence in how they handle challenges with friends, school, and social situations,
- a growing sense that they are not “overreacting,” but learning how to understand and manage what they feel,
- reassurance that their experiences are shared and valid, reducing feelings of isolation,
- a stronger, more grounded sense of who they are, beyond their emotions or reactions.
What a Typical Session Looks Like
Each session follows a gentle, hangout structured flow:
- Guided group discussion using real-life examples
- Short teaching moments to introduce key ideas
- Interactive reflection and shared responses
- Practical tools and strategies introduced and practised
- A short break to reset and connect
- Closing reflection to consolidate learning
Sessions are paced carefully to allow space for thinking, processing, and participation without pressure.
Who This Circle Is For
This circle is designed for young people aged 13–14 who are:
- transitioning into or adjusting to high school
- becoming more aware of their emotions but unsure how to manage them
- experiencing social or peer-related challenges
- needing support in building confidence and emotional understanding
- thoughtful, reflective, or quietly navigating internal pressures
No prior experience or knowledge is needed — just a willingness to engage at their own pace.
Parent Note
This is a psychoeducational wellbeing session, not therapy.
The focus is on helping young people understand their emotions and develop practical skills they can use in everyday life.
The small group setting allows for shared learning and connection, while maintaining appropriate boundaries and guidance.
While participation is encouraged, children are never pressured to share beyond what feels comfortable.
