Dr. Mya Okeowo is a renowned child development specialist and mental health educator with a profound commitment to promoting children’s emotional well-being and rights.

She holds a PhD in Children’s Rights and Childhood Studies from University of London, and a law degree from Cardiff University. Dr. Mya’s extensive research has focused on child protection and safeguarding practices in both African and European contexts. Her professional qualifications include certifications in Special Education Needs (SEN), Advanced Training in Child and Youth Counselling, and a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

As the founder of Train A Child Ltd, Dr. Mya has pioneered the creation of innovative educational resources aimed at nurturing children’s mental and emotional development. Her flagship resource, the ‘My Big Emotions Journal,’ is a daily check-in tool that helps children understand and manage their emotions through engaging prompts and practical strategies. This journal, along with a series of affirmation, gratitude journals, parenting guides and mindfulness colouring books  highlight her dedication to fostering healthy self-care habits in children from an early age.

Dr. Mya has also made significant contributions as an educational consultant. Notably, she served as a liaison between Cambridge University’s Judge Business School and the Niger State government for the Transforming Education in Niger State (TENS) project. In this role, she worked a part of a team to facilitate the implementation of transformative education policies and programs, bridging the gap between academic expertise and governmental needs.

In schools and clinics, Dr. Mya’s mental health education initiatives emphasise preventive care and early intervention. She develops and conducts workshops that equip educators, parents, and clinicians with the tools to support children’s mental health effectively. Her approach underscores the importance of daily emotional check-ins and the development of lifelong emotional regulation skills, positioning her resources as vital components of comprehensive mental health strategies.

Dr. Mya’s career is driven by a deep passion for children’s emotional well-being and rights. Her work continues to impact communities, empowering children and their caregivers with the knowledge and resources necessary for a healthier, more resilient future.
