Emotional Skills Wellbeing Sessions

Helping children understand, express, and manage their emotions with practical tools.

Children are not born knowing how to manage their emotions. These skills are learned over time through guidance, language, and practice.
The Emotional Skills Wellbeing Circle is designed to help children better understand their feelings, develop emotional awareness, and learn practical strategies for responding to overwhelming emotions in healthy ways. Through guided discussion, reflective activities, and practical regulation tools, children begin to recognise what their emotions are communicating and how they can respond with greater confidence.
This small-group circle focuses on teaching practical emotional regulation tools that children can use in everyday situations.

These sessions focus on developing essential emotional skills, including:

• Recognising and naming emotions
• Understanding what feelings may be communicating
• Learning how the body responds to strong emotions
• Developing calming and grounding strategies
• Practising how to pause and respond rather than react
• Building confidence in expressing feelings appropriately

The aim is to support children in developing lifelong emotional awareness and self-regulation skills.

These sessions may benefit children who:

• are learning to recognise and name their emotions

• experience strong feelings and need tools to manage them

• become easily frustrated, upset, or overwhelmed

• find it difficult to pause and respond calmly in emotional situations

• would benefit from learning practical emotional regulation strategies

These sessions focus on building essential emotional skills that children can use in everyday situations.

By the end of the programme, children leave with:

• A clearer understanding of their emotions and what those feelings may be communicating
• Simple calming and grounding tools they can use when emotions feel overwhelming
• Language to describe how they feel, helping them express themselves more confidently
• Greater confidence in navigating emotional moments and everyday challenges
• A stronger sense of emotional awareness and self-understanding

Parents and caregivers also gain insight into how to gently reinforce these tools and conversations at home.

This circle may be helpful for children who:

• are learning to recognise and name their emotions
• experience strong feelings and need support managing them
• become easily frustrated, upset, or overwhelmed
• find it difficult to pause and respond calmly in emotional situations
• would benefit from learning practical emotional regulation tools

The sessions are supportive and preventative, helping children build healthy emotional habits early.
